How to Choose the Best Logistics Route for Shipping Candy from China

The best shipping route for a candy order is not automatically the route with the lowest headline freight rate. A commercially sound route must move the correct product, in the correct condition, through an importable and document-ready chain, within the buyer's real delivery window, at an acceptable total cost and risk level.
To compare routes properly, buyers should first freeze the shipment data: factory location, final delivery point, cargo-ready date, carton count, gross and net weight, carton dimensions, total cubic volume, pallet plan, product type, shelf-life position, temperature and humidity sensitivity, packaging barrier, import-document requirements and the agreed IncotermsRules dividing delivery responsibilities and costs.® rule. The same data set must then be quoted across sea, air, road, rail and multimodal alternatives.
The cheapest freight quote can become the most expensive route after consolidation charges, terminal fees, customs delays, storage, product damage, missed sales and last-mile costs are added.
1. Why Route Selection Matters for Candy
Candy is often treated as simple dry cargo, but different confectionery categories respond differently to heat, humidity, pressure, vibration and handling. Standard gummies can soften, deform or become sticky. Sour-coated gummies may absorb moisture and lose surface powder. Marshmallows can compress, dry out or stick together. Freeze-dried candy is lightweight but extremely moisture-sensitive and fragile. Air-dried fruit can gain or lose moisture. Chocolate-coated products can bloom, soften or melt when exposed to unsuitable temperatures.
The route therefore affects more than transit time. It affects packaging design, carton strength, palletisation, container choice, inspection timing, insurance, shelf lifePeriod product remains within specification. remaining at arrival and the probability that the goods reach the buyer in saleable condition.
2. Define the Shipment Before Requesting Quotes
A forwarder cannot produce a meaningful comparison from a message that only says "ten tonnes of candy from China." The route calculation begins with a complete logistics brief:
- Exact factory or consolidation-warehouse address and preferred pickup date.
- Final delivery address, port, airport, rail terminal or buyer warehouse.
- Product description and applicable HS classification confirmed with the importer or customs broker.
- Number of SKUs, cartons and retail units.
- Net weight, gross weight and verified carton dimensions.
- Total cubic metres before and after palletisation.
- Pallet dimensions, pallet count, stackability and maximum permitted stacking height.
- Product sensitivity to heat, humidity, odours, crushing, vibration and long storage.
- Remaining shelf life required at destination.
- Whether desiccants, thermal protection, liners or data loggers are required.
- Incoterms® rule and exact named place.
- Import documents, licences, inspections or pre-notifications required before arrival.
- Whether the order is ready at one factory or must be consolidated from several factories.
Measured cargo data should replace estimated data before booking. A carton that is slightly larger than expected can increase chargeable volume and move the order into a more expensive service band.

4. FCL vs LCL
LCL
LCL consolidates multiple shippers' goods in one container, usually passing through origin and destination container freight stations. It suits smaller volumes but adds consolidation, devanning, cut-off risk and local charges. Candy in LCL should have reinforced cartons. The buyer should confirm that the consolidator accepts food cargo, controls odour exposure and separates incompatible goods.
FCL
FCL gives one shipper the entire container, enabling controlled loading and sealing with less handling. Even at less than full utilization, FCL may be preferable when the value of reduced breakage and product risk exceeds the cost difference. There is no fixed CBM threshold. Compare LCL and FCL origin, destination, minimum charges, seasonal pricing, trucking and free time for the specific lane.
5. Air Freight and Chargeable Weight
Air freight is charged on whichever is greater: actual gross weight or volumetric weight calculated by the carrier's formula. The volumetric divisor and rounding rules vary by carrier, service and lane. Marshmallows and freeze-dried candy are bulky and light — their chargeable weight may be several times their actual weight.
An air-freight quote should itemize actual dimensions measured, chargeable weight, pickup, airport, security, document, clearance and delivery scope. Comparing only the per-kilogram rate is insufficient.
6. Rail, Road and Multimodal
These options make commercial sense only on specific corridors and require quoting the complete route including terminals, border procedures, transshipment points, schedules and last-mile delivery. Multimodal combinations can balance speed and cost, but every additional handover adds dwell, documentation and responsibility interfaces.
7. Dry Container, Controlled Temperature or Reefer
Many ambient gummies ship in standard dry containers when packaging, season and route are suitable. A reefer is not automatically the safer answer. The decision should be based on product specification, stability data, climate exposure and permitted temperature range.
- Gummies: softening, deformation, sticking, oil migration and sour-coating stability.
- Marshmallows: compression, dehydration, sticking and carton collapse.
- Freeze-dried candy: moisture ingress, seal integrity, breakage and minimising handling.
- Air-dried fruit: moisture balance, microbiological risk, odour and shelf life.
- Chocolate-coated confectionery: maximum exposure temperature, duration and bloom risk.
Temperature control should cover factory holding, container loading, port handling, customs examination, destination warehousing and final delivery. Options include insulated liners, desiccants, thermal blankets, data loggers, night loading or active temperature control.

Compare total route cost per kilogram, per carton, per retail unit and as a percentage of goods value. For seasonal and launch orders, also factor in the cost of late arrival and missed sales.
9. Weight, Volume and Load Factors
- Single-carton CBM = length × width × height converted to cubic metres.
- Total CBM = single-carton CBM × number of cartons.
- After palletisation, recalculate using actual pallet footprint and height.
- For container loading, consider internal dimensions, door clearance, payload limit, stackability and weight distribution.
- Air and courier may apply volumetric weight. LCL may apply minimum charges and W/M rules.
Optimising carton dimensions and pallet plans sometimes reduces total cost more than negotiating a small freight discount. Simulate pallets per container and cartons per pallet before committing to a final carton size.
10. Realistic Transit Times
Main-carriage transit time is not the same as door-to-door time. The complete chain includes: cargo readiness, inspection, palletisation, pickup, export clearance, port cut-off, waiting for sailing, main voyage, transshipment, destination operations, import clearance and final delivery. ETD and ETA are estimates, not guaranteed warehouse-arrival dates.
11. Comparing Quotes Correctly
- Use identical origin, destination, cargo data, scope and Incoterms® point for all quotes.
- Request itemised quotations.
- Distinguish included, excluded, provisional and destination-payable charges.
- Confirm currency, validity period and price-change triggers.
- Confirm carrier, route, transshipment ports and schedule.
- Confirm free time, storage, demurrage and detention rules.
- Confirm insurance coverage, deductibles, exclusions and claims process.
- Confirm customs and food-regulatory scope.
- Confirm how chargeable weight or volume is calculated if measured data changes.
12. Route Risk Assessment
Factors to score for each route: total cost, transit variability, number of handovers, product risk from temperature and humidity, documentation complexity, seasonal reliability, carrier performance history and ability to expedite if delayed.
13. Insurance and Monitoring
Cargo insurance does not replace adequate packaging and quality control. It typically covers defined physical loss or damage during insured transit, not supplier non-performance, quality disputes or commercial delays before shipment. Key decisions: all-risk versus named-perils coverage, agreed value basis, deductible, exclusions relevant to the product category, and whether temperature or moisture exceedance is covered and how evidence is collected.
A data logger placed inside the container creates an independent record of temperature and humidity during transit. This is useful for high-value or sensitive cargo and can support an insurance claim or product-safety decision on arrival.
14. Packaging for Logistics
The chosen route should influence packaging before the carton is committed to print. Factors that change by route include:
- Carton burst strength and edge-crush rating relative to stacking weight and duration.
- Moisture barrier of the primary and secondary packaging relative to route humidity profile.
- Whether the product needs an inner desiccant or oxygen absorber.
- Whether the carton can withstand CFS handling and consolidation.
- Pallet wrap and corner protection for FCL or air-freight pallet builds.
Packaging that protects product in the factory or in a short domestic delivery may be insufficient for a 30-day sea voyage or a CFS consolidation point.
15. Incoterms and Cargo Release

Import documents — invoice, packing list, transport document, certificates and import permits — must be available to the customs broker before or on arrival.
16. Seasonal and Capacity Considerations
Ocean freight capacity and rates vary significantly by season. Key periods to monitor: Chinese New Year factory shutdown and catch-up, Golden Week, the pre-Christmas peak, and typhoon season affecting South China ports. Rail and road also have seasonal capacity constraints on specific corridors. Air freight capacity and rates spike during ocean freight disruptions and peak consumer periods.
Early booking and a clear cargo-ready date reduce exposure to peak-season surcharges and equipment shortages.
17. Common Buyer Mistakes
- Requesting a freight quote before cargo dimensions are confirmed.
- Comparing only the per-kilogram rate without checking local charges.
- Assuming the transit time on a quote sheet is the door-to-door delivery time.

Route selection is one of the decisions buyers treat as an afterthought — and one of the decisions that most directly affects whether the product arrives in sellable condition. Across more than 80 China export projects, the single most expensive shipping mistake we encounter is committing to a sea-freight LCL booking for freeze-dried or heavily sour-coated candy without confirming that the consolidation container will not be co-loaded with goods that off-gas moisture, chemical odour or strong aromas. Porous freeze-dried product absorbs odour and moisture through its packaging if the barrier is imperfect. We have received complaint reports from buyers whose freeze-dried gummy shipments arrived with a faint petrochemical smell — traced back to a co-loaded plastic goods pallet in the LCL container. FCL, even at under-utilization, is often the correct choice for hygroscopic or odour-sensitive confectionery.
For a UK chocolate-coated marshmallow programme, we coordinated three consecutive seasonal shipments over one year. The first was sea freight FCL — correct, uneventful, arrived within 3 days of the scheduled window. The second was LCL because the order volume was smaller. The container passed through a transshipment hub during an unusually warm period; the marshmallows arrived with compression damage and partial stickiness because carton stacking strength was inadequate for the additional dwell time. The third shipment was air freight — cost was higher, but the client had a new retail listing and could not afford a three-week delay. Total per-unit cost was 31% higher by air than by FCL sea, but the margin on the new listing justified it. Route selection is always a business decision, not only a logistics calculation.
The import document chain is the area where we see the most last-minute surprises. Buyers shipping into the US must register with FDA's food import system and ensure that the Prior Notice and FSVP requirements are in place before the goods depart China. Export customs procedures on the China side are administered by the GACC, and any mismatch between the export declaration and the commercial documents can trigger a hold that delays cargo release by days or weeks.
